Jesus Gil Manzano has been appointed to lead an all-Spanish officiating crew for Manchester United's Champions League match against Roma at Old Trafford, scheduled for 8 pm on Tuesday.

Juan Martinez Munuera will serve as fourth official, while Carlos del Cerro Grande handles VAR duties assisted by Cuadra Fernández.

Manchester United, under Michael Carrick, are seeking a win after a ninth-straight game without victory, following a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday.

The club hopes to avoid further controversy from officiating decisions.

Manzano previously sparked debate over two years ago in a Real Madrid-Valencia match during the 2023/24 season.

In injury time, England midfielder Jude Bellingham scored a header that was disallowed because Manzano blew the full-time whistle.

Bellingham and teammates protested fiercely, losing three points in the La Liga title race.

Manzano deemed the protests excessive and issued Bellingham a red card as he left the Mestalla pitch; Antonio Rudiger also received a red card for dissent.

Manzano later wrote in his report that Bellingham had "ran towards him in an aggressive manner", shouting in English, "That's a f***ing goal."

Although the incident did not prevent Real Madrid from winning the league, Carrick will hope no similar episode occurs when Gian Piero Gasperini's Roma visit Manchester.

United have lost their last two European fixtures, against Atletico Madrid and Como, while Roma come into the game after a 5-2 victory over Udinese.
