New Chevening and Allied Bank Partnership Expands UK Study Opportunities for Pakistanis

The UK Government's Chevening programme and Allied Bank Limited (ABL) have launched a new partnership that will enable talented Pakistanis to pursue fully funded master's degrees at leading UK universities. This initiative marks a major development in educational cooperation between the two nations, creating structured pathways for high-achieving individuals to gain world-class academic qualifications.

Allied Bank is the first organisation to establish a locally funded Chevening Scholarship partnership in Pakistan, bringing together the UK's flagship international scholarship programme and Pakistan's private sector to invest in the next generation of Pakistani leaders. Chevening partners with more than 140 organisations, including private companies, NGOs, foreign government departments, and UK universities.

Details of the Chevening-ABL Scholarship Programme

Under the Chevening-ABL Scholarship, two scholars will be supported each year over three academic years, starting in 2027-28. They will study subjects important to Pakistan's future growth, including artificial intelligence, technology, cybersecurity, digital transformation, economics and financial inclusion.

The selection process aligns with the rigorous standards of the broader Chevening framework. The first two Chevening-ABL scholars will be selected from the existing applicant pool for the 2027-28 academic year. Applications for the 2028-29 Chevening-ABL Scholarships are expected to open as part of the Chevening application cycle in August 2027, with successful candidates beginning their studies in the UK in 2028.

Leadership Perspectives on Educational Investment

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott CMG OBE commented on the significance of the agreement for bilateral ties and human capital development. Pakistan's greatest strength is its people. This partnership will help impressive future leaders to study at world-leading UK universities and bring fresh ideas home. It is especially fitting that a former Chevening Scholar is now opening the same door for the next generation.

The partnership also marks a full-circle moment for Allied Bank President and CEO Aizid Gill, who studied MSc Business Economics at the University of Manchester as a Chevening Scholar in 2001. Twenty-five years later, he is helping create the same opportunity for a new generation of Pakistani scholars.

Aizid Gill, President and CEO of Allied Bank Limited, stated that the initiative focuses on practical capacity building. The ABL-Chevening Scholarship is about giving talented Pakistanis the opportunity to learn, grow and bring that exposure back home. Through this partnership, Allied Bank strengthens its support towards enabling the next generation of leaders. We hope this support helps them build the required knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to the country's future.

Background on the Chevening Scholarship Programme

The Chevening programme is the global awards scheme of the UK Government, funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and partner organisations. It offers awards to study in the UK for people with demonstrable potential to become future leaders, decision-makers, and opinion formers. Since the programme started, thousands of international students have completed postgraduate degrees at British higher education institutions.

By bringing in corporate partners like Allied Bank, the scheme extends its financial reach and targets specific academic disciplines that support economic development in recipient countries. The inclusion of fields such as cybersecurity, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence reflects modern priorities in global technology and governance.

Impact on Pakistani Students and Future Growth

The focus on critical technology and economic subjects directly addresses structural skills gaps in developing economies. Scholars returning from British universities bring back institutional knowledge, research expertise, and international professional networks that benefit both public and private sectors in Pakistan.

For prospective applicants, the partnership offers a reliable funding route that covers tuition and living expenses associated with studying abroad. Candidates must meet standard Chevening criteria, demonstrating leadership potential, strong academic backgrounds, and a clear plan to return to Pakistan after completing their studies.
