Chelsea swept Man Utd aside to return to winning ways at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues entered the match having endured significant recent setbacks against Tottenham and Liverpool.

Xabi Alonso's men endured a few scares during the first half, with Bruno Fernandes in particular squandering a huge chance to score.

The match turned in the second period, however, with Morgan Rogers scoring a brilliant solo goal before Lisandro Martinez was sent off.

Cole Palmer subsequently scored from the spot, with Chelsea going on to seal an important 2-0 win.

Here's how SunSport's Jack Rosser rated each Blues performance.

Mike Penders - 6

Despite Fofana's defensive disasterclass which unfolded in front of him at times in the first half, the Belgian had precious little to do for much of the afternoon thanks to United's profligacy.

A much brighter afternoon for Emi Martinez's replacement than last weekend's encounter with Tottenham when he decided to punch one into his own net. It always helps to avoid doing that.

Josh Acheampong - 6

Followed up a bright Anfield display with another here, making a superb last minute lunge to rob Matheus Cunha of a certain first-half goal. Needs to offer a bit more going forwards, however.

Levi Colwill - 7

Combative in the air and far less of a concern on the ball than his defensive partner. Colwill looks a lot more at home when Alonso elects to start a back four rather than have him in the middle or on the left of a three.

Wesley Fofana - 3

The Frenchman made a good block to stop Amad Diallo on the break but that was not enough to make up for the countless openings he offered the visitors.

Too ponderous and slow on the ball and far too soft in the tackle, a true weak link.

Marco Palestra - 6

A long awaited first Chelsea start for the Italian, signed having been named Serie A defender of the year last season. A solid full debut but little to truly shout about.

Good energy and offers options to Alonso on both sides, but it would be good to see Palestra causing some more damage when going forwards.

Romeo Lavia - 8

A second start in the space of four days is a rarity for the Belgian midfielder. There was nothing too spectacular in the first half but he dug the Blues out of a few spots of trouble, reading game well and reacting sharply to snuff out United.

Early in the second some superb work teed up Rogers' opener. Pinching the ball from Bryan Mbeumo and then outmanoeuvring Carlos Baleba. Continued to harry and disrupt the visitors at any opportunity.

Moises Caicedo - 7

Perhaps fortunate to avoid an early booking for holding back Bruno Fernandes but, along with Lavia, Caicedo walked all over the Manchester United midfield.

Quicker into the challenges or onto loose balls and far stronger if either of Andrey Santos or Carlos Baleba came near him. A lesson for the two in red.

Estevao - 7

A surprise start for the Brazilian winger after weeks of frustration from the fanbase and back home in Brazil.

Estevao started out on the right, gave Diogo Dalot something to think about and had the ball in the back of the net, but from an offside position - twice.

The second was a fine finish and unfortunate to be disallowed given just how close it was.

Decision making at times left a lot to be desired, however.

Cole Palmer - 6

Alonso had told Palmer he needed a big performance against Manchester United, but despite scoring from the spot the Chelsea talisman fell rather flat.

It was, of course, an improvement from his petulant red card against Tottenham a week earlier, but for a man who can set the speed of any game there was very little to shout about against a very generous defence. Senne Lammens should really have stopped his penalty, too.

Morgan Rogers - 8

Very sharp feet early on caused United trouble but came to little in terms of end product.

By the start of the first half, the visiting defence appeared to have given up as they all stood off to watch the £117million man glide past them before dinking the ball over Lammens to get the ball rolling.

Pedro Neto - 6

Shunted through the middle and out of position it was a day to simply work hard for Neto, Alonso's utility man.

The Portuguese winger worked tirelessly but never really had the chance to make much impact, with little created for him. Occupied defenders well.

Substitutes

Pep Chavarria - 6

Slotted comfortably into the back four to help see things out against a United side who had given up.

Danny Welbeck - 6

Helped keep Chelsea up the pitch as the 10 minutes added on ticked by but no real chance to add to the suffering at his former club.

Valentin Barco - 6

Some smart work on the ball, one especially nice pass almost teeing up a big chance for Welbeck.

Malo Gusto - 6

Busied himself down the right and saw plenty of the ball, keeping things sensible to run down the clock.

Geovany Quenda - n/a

Came on too late to make an impact.
