Michael Carrick endured his third consecutive defeat on Saturday, marking his ninth match in charge of Manchester United without a victory.

This is the first occasion the club has failed to win in nine games for almost forty years, increasing pressure on the former midfielder.

The last triumph came back in early September, a 4-0 Champions League win over Sabah.

Since that win, United's form has been disastrous.

The record-breaking run, unmatched since 1988, started at Old Trafford with a loss to ten-man Manchester City.

They then led Brighton 2-0 before surrendering a 3-2 defeat and exiting the Carabao Cup at the same stadium.

Two Premier League draws followed, then a 2-0 away loss to Atletico Madrid while reduced to ten men.

A draw at Leeds United came next, followed by a 4-1 thrashing by Cesc Fabregas' Como, and then five more goals conceded against Bournemouth and Chelsea.

Lisandro Martinez featured at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, receiving a penalty and two yellow cards within 82 seconds under Carrick's management.

United's recent fixtures include losses to Bournemouth (1-0), Leeds, Brentford (1-0), Coventry (2-0), Sunderland (0-1), Hull (0-1), Manchester City (0-1), Brighton (0-1) and a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea.

Earlier results this month show a 0-0 draw with Sunderland, a 0-3 loss to Bournemouth, a 2-0 loss to Liverpool, a 1-1 draw with Hull, and a 0-2 defeat to Palace.

In the Premier League table, Manchester City sit top with 21 points from nine games, followed by Arsenal on 21 from eight, Brighton on 19 from nine, Chelsea on 16 from nine, Liverpool on 15 from eight, Brentford on 14 from nine, Ipswich on 13 from nine, and Bournemouth on 12 from nine.

United have lost six, drawn three, scored six and let in 18 goals in Carrick's nine-game spell, averaging two goals conceded per match.

The club gave Carrick a short-term lifeline earlier this week, retaining him despite an eight-game winless run.

Sources close to United say Carrick still has a chance to reverse fortunes, though the team sits 16th in the league.

With the winless streak now extended and three straight defeats, doubts remain about how much longer the former player will stay in charge.
