Federal Minister for Power Division Awais Leghari announced during a Senate session that authorities are addressing the practice of penalizing households with higher electricity rates for half a year whenever monthly usage surpasses 200 units by a single unit.
Addressing the Senate regarding how power distribution company tariffs affect citizens, Leghari mentioned that officials are reviewing an increase in the limit from 200 units to 250 units.
Senator Abid Sher Ali brought up the topic, pointing out that households consuming 201 units experience a steep jump in their per-unit cost and land in a costlier usage tier.
Ali questioned why people exceeding the limit by merely one unit face charges linked to 400 units. In reply, Leghari stated that the administration aims to stop the six-month penalty fees applied to users going past the 200-unit ceiling.
He noted that approximately 20 million users consume under 200 units. Still, he contended that giving subsidies to every such household is improper because certain residences use solar energy to maintain low grid power usage.
Leghari stated that financial assistance will target citizens residing underneath the poverty line.
