Hoffenheim player Alexander Prass faced immediate regret following his goal against Bayer Leverkusen, earning a suspension as a result. The 25-year-old midfielder netted in the 89th minute, increasing his side's lead to 2-0 against the 2023/24 Bundesliga champions.
He ran off to celebrate and immediately removed his jersey. Happiness vanished quickly when he remembered he already held a yellow card. International Football Association Board regulations mandate that players receive a booking for stripping off their shirt during a match.
Consequently, Prass earned a second yellow followed by a red card for his celebration. The midfielder stripped off his jersey and threw it into the air before quickly remembering his situation and putting it back on. The referee refused to ignore the infraction.
Television cameras captured Prass slapping his head while exiting the field. He must now serve a one-game ban for the dismissal. Observers reacted on social media platforms, with one commenter stating, "He realised it the instant he tossed the shirt. You could see the 'ohhhh f***' moment on his face."
Another spectator wrote, "Alexander Prass scores the goal that put the game to bed & forgot he was on a yellow. Took his shirt off to celebrate which is stupid to begin with when anyone does it & got hit with a 2nd yellow and sent off..." Hoffenheim eventually defeated Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 despite being reduced to 10 men.
Prass subsequently published an apology on Instagram addressing his momentary lapse in judgment and his failure to recognize that Loic Bade and Max Moerstedt sustained head injuries during a collision leading up to his goal.
He stated, "Apologies for the red card and for not fully realising the seriousness of the head injury in the moment. Sometimes emotions take over in the game but that's football - I'll take this as a lesson and make sure I learn from it. On a positive note, a massive result for the team today! Great effort from everyone. Let's keep this momentum going!"
