Precious medals were stolen by thieves who targeted and vandalised a memorial dedicated to the Manchester United Munich air disaster. A plane crash on February 6, 1958, tragically claimed the lives of 23 people, including eight Old Trafford players. Vandals smashed a display case at Manchesterplatz, the site of the catastrophe, in an incident Munich Police believe occurred on Monday.

Thieves targeted the tribute to the fallen United heroes, which has previously been visited by Red Devils captain Bruno Fernandes, making off with unique medals and a glass sculpture. Ifty Ahmed, chair of the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation, issued an emotional response regarding the theft. He stated that the foundation is deeply saddened by the act of vandalism and theft, noting that Manchesterplatz holds enormous significance for the families of the 23 victims and supporters worldwide. He expressed gratitude to friends in Munich, particularly the Red Docs, for caring for the site and acting quickly to repair the damage, adding that the culprits cannot steal memories or destroy legacies.

The Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation paid for the glass window repairs on the same day, declining an offer from United to cover the expenses. Supporters of the club took to social media to condemn the actions of the vandals. One person described it as a mindless, disgusting, and disrespectful act while hoping the perpetrators face the law. Another stated that stealing from a memorial is a new low, and a third called the theft horrible. A fourth commenter labeled those responsible as the lowest of the low, while a fifth called the incident unacceptable.

A memorial stone was originally placed at Manchesterplatz in 2004, and a display case was subsequently added. Approximately 1,500 individuals participated in the annual remembrance service held at the location in February.
