Enzo Fernandez insists he is sure about one club he will sign for in the future. The World Cup-winning midfielder only completed his club-record 125 million pound move to Manchester City in September. But he has already revealed that he will not be finishing his career at the Etihad.
Fernandez, 25, is intent on returning to River Plate before he hangs up his boots. The strength of his comments suggests that fans of the Buenos Aires giants can take him for his word. The ex-Chelsea midfielder learned his trade in River's academy, making 51 first-team appearances and scoring 12 goals before leaving for Benfica in 2022.
Fernandez told Los Edul: I want to return to River at some point. I've said it several times. I'm going to return, I'm sure. It's something I really want. I stand by my words and what's on record. If I say it, it's because I feel it and know I need to return to win things and enjoy the River Plate world for many more years than I did. Today, I'm here with a long contract at Man City. There's still a long way to go, but it will happen.
Fernandez penned a bumper five-year deal at City, tying him to the club until the summer of 2031. But the controversy surrounding the club could see big names like him and others jump ship sooner rather than later. City have been found guilty of breaching more than 100 of the Premier League's financial rules, and face a range of punishments including points deductions and expulsion from the top flight.
Before signing with the Blues, Fernandez had flirted with a move to Real Madrid, but in an unusual twist, the Bernabeu side published an official statement distancing themselves from a move for the Argentine.
