Tech giant Samsung has reportedly begun work on a massive foldable tablet capable of stretching from an 8-inch closed size to 17 inches when opened. This follows a previous leak indicating that several versions and test units were already being built.

A tipster on X provided the fresh details, having initially mentioned the project in late August without naming the maker. A recent post has now verified that Samsung has already started.

The initial leak stated the gadget would span 8 inches when shut and grow to 17 inches fully opened. Specifics regarding the screen and appearance are still missing, and the tipster stated they cannot provide further details at this time.

The exact method Samsung will use for this build is uncertain. One option is an outward-folding screen leaving part of the display visible when shut. Another method uses a large interior screen alongside a separate 8-inch cover display, mirroring the Galaxy Z Fold lineup.

The second option might drive up the price significantly. Conversely, an outward-folding screen keeps the main panel exposed while closed. Samsung has looked into large foldables before, mentioning a potential Galaxy Z Tab in 2023 that never launched.

Samsung Display has previously displayed various large foldable panel prototypes at industry events. Manufacturing these screens differs from releasing a retail product, and the mobile division requires sufficient market demand to move forward.

The foldable sector has shifted since past reports, with Apple entering the space via its iPhone Duo, providing Samsung extra motivation to test bigger designs. Samsung has not released official information regarding the tablet, and no release date is confirmed.
