Microsoft announced sweeping changes to its gaming division that endanger Arkane Lyon, the studio behind Marvel's Blade. On July 6, Xbox said it will cut 3,200 jobs before the fiscal year ends, targeting five acquired studios, Ninja Theory, Compulsion Games, Double Fine, Undead Labs and Arkane Lyon, for closure or sale.
Arkane Lyon remains operational thanks to France's Florange Law, which obliges large firms to look for a buyer before laying off staff or shutting a subsidiary. The studio has therefore entered urgent talks with the French government for financial support.
Marvel's Blade Could Be Cancelled IF Arkane Lyon Misses Deadline
A French newspaper reports that the official consultation period for Arkane Lyon concludes on November 13. A union representative, using a pseudonym, warned that failure to find a buyer by that date could cost 217 workers their jobs and force the studio to close.
Such a closure would likely lead to the immediate cancellation of Marvel's Blade. The same union source said the game is "nearing the end" of production and that canceling it now would be a "monumental waste," believing the title will be a huge success.
Seeking a Financial Partner
Arkane has not released a public statement on its buyer search, but Microsoft told the French outlet it is actively looking for a partner to fund the next development stage and bring Marvel's Blade to market.
The situation is stark given recent praise for the team. Two weeks before the July divestiture announcement, Bethesda Executive Producer Todd Howard said in an interview that Arkane Lyon developers were doing a "really, really great job." He added that the game is shaping up exceptionally well, making a missed deadline even more damaging for the staff.
