National Bank of Pakistan announced its financial results for the first nine months of 2026 yesterday, after the Board of Directors convened to review and endorse the interim condensed financial statements ending on September 30, 2026.
Operating within a reduced interest-rate climate following a particularly robust prior comparative period, the institution posted total income of PKR 193.6 Bn alongside a profit after tax of PKR 48.9 Bn, yielding earnings per share of PKR 22.98 for 9M'26. The previous year's timeframe had drawn advantages from a declining policy rate environment that yielded elevated net interest income and larger capital-market gains.
Gross interest income reached PKR 562.6 Bn, marking a 6.4% year-on-year drop driven mainly by lower average interest rates. Earnings from the institution's investment holdings totaled PKR 427.1 Bn, with allocations continuing to favor shorter-term government securities. Funding expenses registered at PKR 406.5 Bn, leaving net interest income at PKR 156.1 Bn.
Non-fund revenue accumulated to PKR 37.5 Bn. Foreign-exchange gains grew by 24.3% year on year to PKR 5.9 Bn, and dividend returns increased by 33.4% to PKR 5.2 Bn. Fee and commission earnings settled at PKR 17.9 Bn amid softer business volumes. Capital gains reached PKR 9.8 Bn, dropping from PKR 13.3 Bn in 9M'25 when market activity was exceptionally strong.
Operating expenditures climbed 8.8% year on year to PKR 96.8 Bn, demonstrating a slower pace than the 9.3% increase from the corresponding timeframe last year. This change highlights ongoing cost control amid inflationary pressures and continued spending on institutional capabilities. The cost-to-income ratio landed at 50.0%, capturing the effect of reduced revenue on operational efficiency.
Overall assets expanded by 9.7% to reach PKR 7,753.1 Bn, rising from PKR 7,067.0 Bn at the close of 2025. Net advances crept up 1.7% to PKR 1,360.8 Bn, while investments at cost grew to PKR 5,290.5 Bn, driven largely by government securities. Through its deposit strategy, the lender shed certain costly deposits, bringing total deposits to PKR 4,012.7 Bn. The deposit mix stayed solid, featuring core sticky deposits of PKR 3,591.1 Bn that made up 89.5% of the total, alongside current accounts of PKR 1,896.9 Bn representing 47.3%.
During the period, the institution distributed a payout of PKR 35 per share for 2025, totaling PKR 74.5 Bn and delivering a substantial return to investors. Subsequent to this distribution, net assets rested at PKR 470.2 Bn and total eligible capital reached PKR 478.2 Bn. The Capital Adequacy Ratio settled at 21.12%, with a Tier 1 capital ratio of 16.46% and a leverage ratio of 3.69%, staying safely above regulatory minimums. PACRA and VIS Credit Rating both reaffirmed the lender's standalone credit rating of "AAA", the highest mark given to any bank in Pakistan.
The Federal Government named Mr. Imran Sarwar as President and CEO on September 3, 2026, for a three-year term. Reflecting on the 9M'26 financial performance, the President stated that the strength of NBP stems from client trust, staff dedication, and balance sheet resilience. He added that the figures mirrored the existing interest-rate climate while proving that the organization stayed profitable and well-capitalized following significant shareholder payouts.
The bank maintains support for key economic sectors including agriculture, SMEs, microfinance, and Islamic banking via its Aitemaad network, while pushing forward with digital upgrades. Environmental, social, and governance principles are being integrated into operations, alongside the expansion of green banking offerings and corporate social responsibility efforts.
Since its founding in 1949, NBP has remained focused on broadening financial access and backing the socio-economic growth of Pakistan. This ongoing duty continues to direct the mission of the institution and support its motto: Ek Azm, Ek Pehchan - National Bank Aur Pakistan.
