Hardware startup Aina has introduced a new AI-powered smart ring that features a display, joystick, microphone, and speaker, allowing users to make calls, control applications, and interact with AI assistants directly from their finger. The device, called the Aina AI Ring, arrives as a departure from standard health tracking wearables, targeting instead the hardware control of smartphones, computers, and connected systems. While traditional wearables focus on heart rate and sleep patterns, this new gadget concentrates on digital productivity and software navigation.
The device is available for preorder at $399, with shipments expected to begin in January 2027. Its regular price will increase to $499 after the introductory offer ends. Aina opened preorders for its AI Ring on November 5, 2026, building on a funding round of $5.5 million raised in July 2026 to develop hardware for controlling AI agents.
What Features Does the Aina AI Ring Include?
The Aina AI Ring features a small screen that displays phone notifications, upcoming meetings, and information about the applications being controlled. Users can navigate through the interface using a built-in joystick or gestures. The ring can also trigger different actions depending on which application is open on a connected phone or Mac. Its microphone allows users to record voice notes, send prompts to AI agents, create reminders, and dictate text on a Mac. For dictation, the device supports Wispr Flow as well as Aina's own voice-to-text system. The built-in speaker also allows users to answer and make phone calls directly through the ring.
Beyond AI interactions, the ring can control music playback, manage notifications, and operate compatible smart home devices, including Apple TV. It can also display notifications and let users respond to them without opening their phones. According to TechCrunch, the device can surface upcoming meetings and perform actions such as requesting an Uber ride. However, some of these software capabilities are still being developed and refined. Aina says the device is intended for people who frequently switch between applications, connected devices, and AI assistants.
How Does the Smart Ring Control Phones and Macs?
The device bridges the gap between physical movement and digital software execution. When connected to a smartphone or a Mac computer, the ring registers inputs from its integrated joystick and physical gestures. These inputs translate into software commands, enabling users to switch tracks, adjust volumes, or manage desktop tasks without touching their primary screens. The contextual awareness of the ring ensures that moving the joystick or pressing a button performs different actions depending on the active application.
Voice integration adds another layer of functionality to the computer and phone control scheme. Users can dictate messages or documents directly into a Mac using either Wispr Flow or the proprietary Aina voice system. The microphone also captures voice prompts for AI agents, allowing individuals to queue tasks or manage reminders while away from a keyboard. The built-in speaker closes the loop, letting users hear phone calls and audio feedback directly from the finger without holding a handset.
Background on Aina and the Mirage Controller
The new ring builds on Aina's previous product, Mirage, a three-button controller designed for Mac computers. Mirage allowed users to assign different functions to its buttons depending on the application running on their computer. For example, during a Google Meet call, users could mute their microphone, switch off their camera, or leave a meeting using the physical buttons. The AI Ring expands this approach by adding a display, joystick, voice commands, and gesture controls.
Aina founder Apoorv Shankar told TechCrunch that traditional phone and laptop interfaces were designed around opening applications and browsing information. He believes AI agents that perform tasks proactively will require simpler ways for users to interact with them and approve their actions. This philosophy guided the transition from a desktop button pad to a wearable ring that sits on the hand during daily routines.
Market Context for AI Wearables
Aina enters a growing market of AI-powered wearables, where products such as Pebble Index 01, Sandbar Stream, Oasis, and Natura already offer voice recording or AI-related functions. However, Aina is taking a different approach by combining AI controls with a screen, joystick, speaker, and support for everyday applications. Most competing devices rely solely on audio or basic sensor inputs, whereas the Aina product incorporates visual feedback via its miniature display.
The wearable tech sector has seen increased interest as consumers look for ways to reduce screen time and manage notifications more efficiently. By placing a control interface on the hand, startups aim to offer faster access to digital tools. As development continues on the software side, the success of these hardware platforms depends on how well they integrate with existing operating systems on mobile phones and personal computers.
