How WhatsApp is Changing Message Previews on Android

WhatsApp is developing a new feature that will allow Android users to read messages without opening conversations or triggering blue ticks, even when read receipts are enabled. The upcoming feature will let users preview recent messages by pressing and holding a conversation in the chat list. According to Android Authority, the feature was discovered in WhatsApp beta version 2.26.44.12 for Android. Although it is still under development, early testing has revealed how it will work.

The messaging platform continues to update its interface to give users more control over their privacy and reading habits. Many users prefer to check incoming texts discreetly before deciding whether to reply immediately. This new addition addresses that need directly within the chat list interface.

How to Read WhatsApp Messages Without Opening Chats

Currently, Android users can disable read receipts to prevent others from knowing when they have read messages. However, this setting applies across conversations, and users who keep read receipts enabled generally have to rely on notification previews to check messages without triggering blue ticks. WhatsApp's new feature will provide another option.

Users will be able to long-press a conversation in the chat list to open a floating preview window showing its latest messages. The preview will appear above a redesigned menu containing options such as pinning, archiving, muting, marking messages as unread, and deleting conversations. Most importantly, reading messages through the preview will not send read receipts to the sender. Blue ticks will only appear when users open the conversation normally.

Comparing Android and iPhone Message Preview Capabilities

WhatsApp already offers a similar feature on iPhones. On iOS, users can press and hold a conversation to preview its latest messages without sending read receipts. However, the iPhone version has a limitation: users cannot scroll through the preview window to read older messages. The upcoming Android version will reportedly address this issue by allowing users to scroll upward inside the preview.

This means Android users will be able to check older messages without opening the conversation or triggering blue ticks. Currently, long-pressing a chat on Android only selects the conversation and displays options such as pin, archive, mute, and delete. The new update will replace this behavior with a preview window and a redesigned context menu, giving Android a distinct advantage in functionality.

When Will the Feature Be Available to Public Users?

According to Android Authority, the functionality was discovered through an APK teardown of WhatsApp beta 2.26.44.12. WABetaInfo also identified the feature in beta version 2.26.44.11. However, it is not yet available to public beta testers, as WhatsApp is still developing it.

The company has not announced when the feature will reach the stable Android application. While the feature could arrive in a future WhatsApp update, its release is not guaranteed because features discovered during development do not always reach the public version.

Understanding WhatsApp Beta Testing and APK Teardowns

App development involves rigorous testing cycles before public rollouts occur. Publications like Android Authority analyze application package files, known as APKs, to find hidden lines of code pointing to unreleased capabilities. These code fragments show what engineers are building behind the scenes.

Testers often examine beta builds to understand how future updates might alter user experiences. Companies use beta channels to test stability and fix bugs before releasing updates to billions of global users. Until an official announcement arrives from WhatsApp, users must wait for the code to transition into active testing phases.
