Football fan favourite Billy Sharp has made a surprising comeback to the sport only weeks following his retirement announcement.

Sharp has agreed to rejoin Rushden and Diamonds, a team he previously represented in 2005.

This development follows the 40-year-old player declaring he was hanging up his boots during a live television broadcast on Sky Sports a few weeks ago.

Rushden and Diamonds announced the addition of the player through their social media channels on Sunday.

The eighth-tier club stated that after 21 years away, Billy Sharp is a Diamond again, noting that he scored the initial strike of his 299 career goals for them back in 2005.

The team mentioned his career spans over 22 years with 299 goals, including stints at Sheffield United, Doncaster Rovers, Southampton, and Scunthorpe.

According to the club, Sharp joins to assist the squad due to James Clifton being suspended, and they look forward to seeing him wear the shirt one final time as they face Burton Albion in the FA Cup 1st Round Proper for the first time in team history.

This arrangement looks to be a final appearance for Sharp with his former side, specifically for the cup fixture.

The Diamonds aim to create an upset when they visit Burton Albion on Saturday November 7.

Although five divisions separate the clubs, Sharp aims to experience FA Cup success during his last competitive match.
