Fabian Hurzeler and Yasin Ayari celebrated a swift revenge on Wednesday night, securing a 1-0 win for Brighton less than 72 hours after their Etihad defeat.
Brighton left the Carabao Cup shoot-out on the losing side after leading twice, with Ayari missing a penalty, but they turned their luck around in the league match as Enzo Maresca's side squandered numerous chances.
The triumph gave Hurzeler his third league victory, placing the Seagulls just two points behind leaders Manchester City.
Brighton's hard work and defensive resolve earned them credit for staying in the title race.
Meanwhile, Maresca showed visible frustration after Ayari grabbed an unexpected 11th-minute winner, even as Erling Haaland failed to score.
Swedish midfielder Ayari, who had been vocal after the cup loss, celebrated the goal despite earlier disappointment.
Matheus Nunes should have easily dealt with a low cross to the far post, but he hesitated, allowing Ayari to score the early goal.

Saturday 31 October fixtures included Bournemouth 2-0 Leeds, Brentford 2-0 Forest, Coventry 3-1 Sunderland, Hull 2-2 Ipswich, Man City 0-1 Brighton, Spurs vs Palace at 17:30, Villa vs Fulham at 20:00.
Brighton's victory came after a series of missed chances, despite ten changes from the line-up that had won the previous cup round.
Elliott Anderson could have equalised but his first touch was poor, sending the ball wide.
Iliman Ndiaye then missed a header from six yards out.
By the 25th minute, a shot from a former Everton winger went straight to goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
Jeremy Doku spent much of the first third battling double markers Chema Andres and Olivier Boscagli before finally finding Erling Haaland, who missed a clear chance as Lewis Dunk blocked.
Brighton captain Dunk later blocked another Haaland attempt and was involved in a near-penalty situation, but referee Craig Pawson correctly halted play.
City's first-half performance was uneven, with unconvincing finishing and constant pressure from Brighton.
Diego Gomez slipped past Anderson, passing to Ayari, whose cross was mishit by De Cruyper.
Ndiaye produced a strong shot after a deflection off Josko Gvardiol, but Verbruggen saved spectacularly.
Verbruggen also denied a sharp strike from Matheus Nunes, prompting Nunes to punch his thigh in frustration.
Ryan Cherki replaced Bouaddi in the 55th minute, increasing City's attacking tempo.
Despite more chances, Ndiaye missed a close-range effort in the 76th minute, with no Brighton defender nearby.
