The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has taken into custody a man accused of extracting roughly Rs 4.45 million from a woman by promising marriage on a matrimonial app. The agency says he later threatened to circulate manipulated pictures of her online to demand more money.
Online Transfers Followed by Alleged Threats
NCCIA reports the suspect, identified as Hassam Uddin, received the funds through online bank transfers. The purported threats involving altered photos came after those payments.
He has been charged under the relevant sections of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016.
Agency Appeals to Other Potential Victims
Preliminary investigations suggest other women might have been targeted using the same approach, the agency said. NCCIA has requested anyone who may be affected to report their case, promising confidentiality.
The agency also advised the public to exercise caution when using matrimonial apps and social media platforms.
