Bruno Fernandes and Michael Carrick have attempted to resolve their disagreement at Manchester United. The team captain is now set to play against Chelsea on Saturday following discussions with Carrick, who is fighting to keep his job at Old Trafford. Fernandes, 32, previously criticized the manager's tactics after a 4-1 Champions League defeat in Como eight days ago. Carrick responded by stating, "If you don't run forward or back, you aren't going to win."
The temporary truce followed the benching of Fernandes during Sunday's 3-0 home loss against Bournemouth. Carrick stated the exclusion was for football reasons, despite the midfielder being fit. The punishment backfired as United stretched their winless run to eight matches across all competitions. Both the head coach and team captain met face-to-face at Carrington on Tuesday, and United confirmed that Carrick, 45, remains in charge.
The manager will face the media today before Saturday's lunchtime match in West London on Halloween. Both individuals agreed to focus on improving United's difficult season, starting at Stamford Bridge. That match will be followed by home games against Roma in the Champions League and Aston Villa in the Premier League. Following November's international break, United will play Liverpool at Anfield.
Fernandes had a difficult week after being substituted after 67 minutes against Cesc Fabregas team in Como and then criticizing his manager. The PFA Player of the Year also discovered his Cheshire mansion was burgled while he was away on club duty. Despite being benched against Bournemouth, Fernandes was among the players booed after the defeat. On Monday, he liked a cryptic social media post stating, "Never push a loyal person to the point where they no longer care."
The United squad also held a meeting on Tuesday. Players and staff agreed that performances must improve rapidly as the club sits 16th in the Premier League. United received a boost as England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo returned to training. Mainoo, 21, suffered a muscle injury during a 1-1 draw with Spurs and missed four matches. Meanwhile, striker Benjamin Sesko, 23, has been ruled out until the new year due to a shin problem.
