Dictionary.com selected the term “maxxing” as its word of the year for 2026 on Sunday, a choice that will surprise few people who spend time online.
The suffix now attaches itself to numerous activities, including sleep, protein, gym, and lethality, making mainstream adoption inevitable.
Many observers trace the popularity of maxxing back to the controversial influencer Clavicular, who faced charges last month for raping a 17-year-old girl.
The influencer previously promoted “looksmaxxing,” an internet subculture dedicated to maximizing physical looks, though the term originates from 1990s gamers who used to “min-max” character traits.
Once confined to specific online groups, the expression now applies to activities like sleepmaxxing, cosymaxxing, and tokenmaxxing artificial intelligence tools at work.
Dictionary.com included affordability, data centre, odyssey, and unc on its 2026 shortlist.
Affordability and data centre earned spots due to widespread global concern, while the platform credited odyssey to director Christopher Nolan after his movie The Odyssey surpassed the $1 billion threshold at the worldwide box office in August. Meanwhile, Gen Z and Alpha populations use unc as the modern equivalent of “OK Boomer.”
The Pakistani Angle
English-speaking young people in Pakistan on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and X have quickly embraced expressions such as “looksmaxxing” and “sleepmaxxing.”
This development reflects the expanding tech-savvy youth culture in the country, occurring alongside ongoing debates by local regulators regarding social media safety and content moderation for minors, which intensified recently.
