An accused in a cheque-dishonour matter turned himself in after the Supreme Court asked why he had reached the apex court without being taken into custody, despite bail being denied by both the trial court and the Lahore High Court.

A bench led by Justice Malik Shahzad was reviewing the bail request when it raised the issue with a Punjab Police officer present in the courtroom.

Justice Shahzad inquired why police had not apprehended the accused after lower courts rejected his bail applications, adding that, given such conduct, the officer ought to be considered for the Inspector General post.

Justice Shakeel Ahmad pointed out that it had become a habit for Punjab Police to refrain from arresting individuals after bail denial, noting that this occurs even in grave matters such as murder.

Justice Shahzad then asked the petitioner's lawyer if he would withdraw the petition or let the court dismiss it on its merits. Following this, the accused surrendered to police and his counsel withdrew the petition.

The court then closed the case.
