PETER SCHMEICHEL slammed Lisandro Martinez after Manchester United lost to Chelsea.

The Argentine defender was given the nod alongside Harry Maguire in the Red Devils' defence as Michael Carrick tried to get the side's nightmare season back on track.

But there was no escape from the misery to be found for United, who conceded an opener before a bizarre lapse in judgement from Martinez saw him give away a penalty and pick up a second yellow card to knock his side out of contention.

Martinez had picked up a first yellow just four minutes earlier when he dived towards Wesley Fofana in his own area, leading with his forearm that ended up smashing into the Frenchman's face.

Var awarded the spot kick while The Butcher picked up a second yellow and was sent off.

Schmeichel was furious with his conduct and could barely put the depth of his frustration into words.

He said: "I put this solely on Lisandro Martinez's shoulder, this is an absolute disgrace how he played this game.

"Two weeks ago he made some very, very strong statements against his team-mates, against the football club, and it felt like he was trying to orchestrate a move.

"He's in his last year of his contract. What he did today, honestly I have no words."

Martinez came under scrutiny following United's Champions League loss to Atletico in October after he questioned the team's recruitment and especially the work of technical director Jason Wilcox.

He said after the disappointing defeat that "it is the reflection in the mirror of how our club is at the moment" and called for the hierarchy "to bring more players to compete."

But the 28-year-old hardly covered himself in glory on Saturday, as record Blues signing Morgan Rogers danced through the back line and shrugged off his challenge before dinking Senne Lammens.

Schmeichel continued: "The first goal... I mean he's played a World Cup final. Somebody who has played a World Cup final can't defend the way he defended on the first goal.

"The penalty... I have no words. Literally I have no words of how crazy that was.

"And then he walks off the pitch, shaking his head as if he's done nothing wrong. So bad."

Carrick did not acknowledge Martinez as he trudged off and down the tunnel.
