Manchester United has reportedly endured a week of hard truths, featuring six difficult days of airing out tensions and frank exchanges at every level. Boss Michael Carrick needs a result immediately, as all the uncomfortable conversations and dressing room finger pointing mean nothing if the Red Devils cannot break an eight-game winless streak.

United sits 16th in the Premier League table just two points off the bottom and heads to Chelsea for the lunchtime fixture, hoping to lift their manager and escape the relegation zone. Carrick offered a rare glimpse into his discussions with CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.

The coach said, It is not always rosy with nice conversations between anyone. Whether that is me and the players, whether that is between me, Jason or Omar or the owners. It is the truth, it is the hard truth at times and it is what we need to move forward.

Bruno Fernandes, 32, and Carrick clashed before the midfielder questioned tactics after a 4-1 Como defeat. They held another chat after Carrick left the captain on the bench for a 3-0 home loss against Bournemouth. Minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe gave Carrick a stay of execution following a boardroom meeting.

United spent £163million with add-ons on four players in the summer, leaving them outspent by newly promoted Hull at £179.3m and Ipswich at £210.6m. The club is £1.1 billion in debt while Ratcliffe focuses on building a new ground. Carrick now matches an unwanted record of eight winless matches set during Louis van Gaal's tenure, with a ninth game threatening a 38-year mark.

Kobbie Mainoo has returned to training in a boost for the side. The Red Devils have not won a match without the 21-year-old England midfielder starting in 2026.
