Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif instructed the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority to adopt artificial intelligence and analytics tools for tracking the national petroleum products supply chain, following a directive to collaborate with Alibaba Group.

The announcement emerged from an Islamabad gathering on Wednesday that evaluated advancements in artificial intelligence, economic digitalisation, governance, and state collaboration with Alibaba Group.

The Prime Minister Office stated that the regulator is receiving business intelligence and artificial intelligence instruments to examine fuel supply chain records.

What the System Will Do

Authorities have not disclosed technical specifics or a launch schedule for the monitoring network. Still, the analysis instruments aim to assist the regulator in reviewing supply records and strengthening supervision regarding petroleum distribution from refineries and ports to fuel stations.

The prime minister instructed appropriate ministries to finalise all required steps for Alibaba-supported initiatives by November and present an update. He stated that all joint ventures need defined goals, schedules, and strong tracking to produce measurable outcomes.

Builds on OGRA's Existing Digital Monitoring

The regulatory body already operates multiple electronic tracking instruments.

During July 2026, the regulator informed the prime minister that a National Monitoring Dashboard, a Tanker Track and Trace system, depot tank telemetry, the Rahguzar mobile app, a digital sales entry system at petrol pumps and a Central Monitoring Cell were active to track petroleum stocks, movement and sales.

The authority also reported that an analytical enforcement drive in July 2026 uncovered numerous instances of stockpiling and artificial distribution shortages, resulting in formal warnings and judicial proceedings. The agency previously deployed a nationwide track and trace network to modernise the oil distribution network of Pakistan.

Other AI Projects With Alibaba

The regulator monitoring platform forms one component of broader efforts connected to the state strategic alliance with Alibaba Group.

The prime minister additionally ordered the swift deployment of an artificial intelligence cancer detection platform alongside a 15-day artificial intelligence instruction course for technology graduates via the Ministry of IT Ignite initiative.

Attendees learned that development continues on artificial intelligence frameworks for farming, tracking solutions for tobacco, and electronic marketplaces promoting citrus and olive exports.

Electronic and artificial intelligence projects across universities, railway operations, postal networks, and city administration are likewise approaching finalisation.

"The secret to Pakistan's development lies in artificial intelligence and digitalisation," the prime minister said, according to the PMO. Earlier this month, Pakistan also sought World Bank financing for a national AI program.
