Thrive Holdings, a private-equity spin-out, announced Thursday that it has bought physical-security firm ADT for $10 per share, amounting to roughly $7.6 billion in equity.
The transaction's total enterprise value stands at $15.3 billion, according to ADT.
Thrive Holdings emerged from Josh Kushner's venture capital firm Thrive Capital and lists OpenAI as both a partner and investor. The firm says it intends to hold its portfolio companies for the long term and revitalize them using artificial intelligence. It currently reports ownership of more than 75 companies.
OpenAI's role as a partner includes providing AI models, technology and forward-deployed engineers to the companies in Thrive's portfolio.
While neither ADT nor Thrive disclosed specific AI-driven security products, they hinted at plans to invest and launch new offerings. A press release stated, "ADT will form the foundation of Thrive Holdings' smart home security business."
The market for AI-enabled physical security is expanding. Apple recently entered the space with a smart-home and security line created with LG and Schneider Electric, and Amazon has refreshed its smart-home lineup with AI-powered cameras. Some startups are even testing AI-controlled dog robots as mobile security guards.
