While Pakistan remains devoted to its tea, local researchers are getting involved in the scientific study of coffee. Scientists hailing from Pakistan have partnered with specialists from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and China for a research initiative focused on enhancing the taste and standard of Arabica coffee beans by using sophisticated fermentation methods.
Pu'er University, located in the Yunnan province of China, hosted the official launch event for the project on October 31.
This initiative arrives as coffee builds a larger following within Pakistan, especially among younger buyers. Based on trade figures from the World Bank, Pakistan brought in approximately 350 tonnes of unroasted coffee beans during 2025, marking an increase of more than double from the 160 tonnes documented in 2024.
Through this partnership, Pakistani scientists can share scientific knowledge and investigate innovative methods for processing coffee, while the study mainly aids the Pu'er coffee sector in China.
Even though tea remains the favorite drink in Pakistan, local experts are currently assisting in the investigation of methods for producing superior coffee.
