Reddit stated plans to restrict platform access mostly to registered users, bringing a major shift in how visitors view the site. Falling Google Search traffic and rising competition from artificial intelligence search tools prompted this move. Chief Executive Officer Steve Huffman revealed the strategy on October 29, 2026, during the third-quarter earnings report. International trials in markets outside the United States begin in the fourth quarter, though a worldwide release schedule remains unannounced.

Reddit Wants More Users to Sign In

Historically, visitors could view most discussions without registering. Many internet users append the word Reddit to Google searches for human recommendations. The platform now encourages visitors to create accounts prior to browsing. Huffman explained that the change will deliver better personalized recommendations, boost advertising, and shield content from unauthorized artificial intelligence scraping. Logged-in accounts share interests and activity, enabling the platform to suggest relevant communities. This also improves advertiser reach. The platform recently launched a new For You feed combining followed communities with tailored suggestions.

Google Search Traffic Is Falling

Search engine referrals dropped substantially, according to the company. October search referrals fell by over one million per week on average. Daily active users could drop by a low-double-digit percentage during the fourth quarter if the trend persists. Global daily active users reached 130.3 million in the third quarter, remaining flat from the prior period. United States daily active users dropped to 50.7 million in the third quarter from 53.2 million in the second quarter. Domestic daily active users also dropped 2% year over year. Artificial intelligence search tools providing direct answers drive this decline, affecting publishers relying on Google.

Reddit Reports Record Revenue Despite User Decline

Third-quarter financial results beat expectations despite slower user growth. Revenue climbed 53% year over year to $895 million, beating analyst forecasts of roughly $875 million. Net income jumped 74% to $283 million. Advertising revenue climbed 54% to $847 million, while other sources like artificial intelligence data licensing grew 35% to $48 million. Revenue per active user also increased. United States average revenue per daily active user climbed 53% to $13.82, while the global figure rose 36% to $6.87.

Reddit Wants to Protect Its Content From AI Companies

Controlling artificial intelligence access to platform content drives the upcoming adjustments. Millions of user-written discussions and reviews hold high value for artificial intelligence developers. The company prefers licensing deals over unauthorized data harvesting. Requiring accounts could block automated systems from scraping large amounts of data. The firm already sells data to artificial intelligence developers and seeks tighter control over third-party usage.

Will Reddit Become Completely Private?

The transition will not happen instantly. Tests in specific international markets will precede any global rollout. Huffman noted that keeping certain content accessible without logging in stays important, such as posts found via search engines or shared links. Final decisions on which pages require accounts remain pending. Users can still maintain anonymity through a rebuilt incognito browsing feature that separates browsing history from account recommendations. Unregistered browsing remains possible for now, pending broader test expansions.
