British authorities updated the T2 Minister of Religion visa regulations, altering financial criteria, eligible religious positions, and visa length while abolishing the six-year maximum stay limit. UK Visas and Immigration stated that the updates also cover immigration bail and provisions for individuals who have overstayed previous visas. This visa permits foreign citizens to take up prominent religious positions in the country, such as ministers, missionaries, and members of religious orders, and offers a route toward permanent settlement.

Changes to Eligible Religious Roles

Under the updated guidelines, members of religious orders do not need to follow the general rule requiring jobs to avoid mainly non-pastoral responsibilities. Such tasks involve school teaching, media production, domestic work, and administrative work. Leadership roles inside religious groups can also qualify for an exemption.

Pastoral duties typically involve leading worship, preaching, giving religious education, performing marriages and funerals, counseling, and aiding religious communities.

Revised Financial Requirements

Authorities also updated financial criteria for applicants who do not qualify for the National Minimum Wage. For these individuals, an A-rated sponsor must verify that it will supply financial backing and housing during the entire permitted stay in the UK.

Applicants who qualify for the National Minimum Wage can satisfy the financial condition by demonstrating savings of at least £1,270 held for 28 days or getting confirmation that an A-rated sponsor will supply support of at least £1,270 throughout their first month of employment.

Individuals applying to prolong their stay may also qualify if they have already lived in the UK with legal permission for at least 12 months.

Changes to Visa Duration

Another major update is the elimination of the prior six-year maximum limit for holders of the Minister of Religion visa.

Nonetheless, individual visa approvals stay restricted to the shorter of three years or the employment duration listed on the Certificate of Sponsorship, plus 14 days.

Approved applicants get an electronic visa, or eVisa, available via their UKVI account.

Visa Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the visa, applicants need to gather 70 points, which includes 50 for a valid Certificate of Sponsorship, 10 for satisfying financial rules, and 10 for proving English language skills at B2 level in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, unless an exemption applies.

Applicants must additionally be at least 18 years old and hold a Certificate of Sponsorship issued no more than three months before applying.

They must pay the required visa fees and Immigration Health Surcharge, provide identity and biometric details, and present a tuberculosis test certificate when necessary.

The guidance further specifies that applicants must genuinely intend and be able to carry out their sponsored religious responsibilities.

Immigration Bail and Overstaying Rules

Concerning immigration status, people on immigration bail typically cannot qualify for this pathway.

However, specific periods of overstaying can be ignored if applicants satisfy the relevant Exceptions for Overstayers provisions.

Work Rights and Family Members

Visa holders can bring qualifying dependent partners and children to the UK.

They are also permitted to take on secondary work for up to 20 hours weekly, provided it happens outside their sponsored working hours and belongs to the same profession at the same professional level or entails a job on the Immigration Salary List.

Other secondary employment might demand a separate Certificate of Sponsorship and extra immigration permission.

Visa holders can study and do voluntary work, subject to applicable conditions, but typically cannot access public funds.

Pathway to Permanent Settlement

The pathway keeps offering a route to permanent settlement after five years of qualifying continuous residence.

Applicants must satisfy residence rules, clear the Life in the UK test, and secure confirmation from their sponsor that their job remains necessary.

People previously sponsored under the earlier Tier 2 Minister of Religion pathway can also request visa extensions, changes of employment, and settlement under the current system.
