On November 1, 2026, the Federal Board of Revenue refreshed the Active Taxpayers List, removing all individuals who missed submitting their income tax return or an extension request prior to the October 31 deadline. Prior to this, the agency pushed back the Tax Year 2026 submission cutoff twice, moving it from September 30 to October 15, and subsequently to October 31. Officials gave no further deadline extensions.

Late Extension Requests Also Show Inactive

Taxpayers who filed extension requests under Sections 119(1) and 114 late during the evening of the cutoff, and still await a decision, currently appear as inactive on the updated roster. Their classification relies entirely on the Commissioner granting approval for the paperwork.

What This Means for You

Citizens with missing names now face non-filer status. Property registrars, financial institutions, and vehicle registration departments can withhold higher tax amounts from these individuals until their names return to the register. Submissions remain possible through IRIS, though the system records them as tardy. Section 182A dictates that tardy submitters do not rejoin the roster automatically upon filing. Instead, they must clear a surcharge:

  • Individuals: Rs. 25,000
  • Associations of persons: Rs. 50,000
  • Companies: Rs. 100,000

Tardy submitters left off the register also cannot claim tax refunds and forfeit the ability to carry forward business losses for the period. Authorities may additionally levy a tardy submission penalty under Section 182.
