A severe shortage of cardiac stents at the Faisalabad Institute of Cardiology Hospital, also known as FIC, over the past several days has left a large number of heart patients facing difficulties accessing treatment.
According to sources, the hospital has been experiencing a serious shortage of stents used in angioplasty for approximately 10 days, with new stock expected to arrive in another two to three weeks.
Under the current circumstances, stents are being provided only to patients brought to the hospital in critical condition due to heart attacks, while patients visiting the OPD, including those waiting months for scheduled angioplasty procedures, are being deprived of treatment.
Patients travel to the hospital from Faisalabad, Toba Tek Singh, Gojra, Jhang, Chiniot, Bhowana, Jaranwala and surrounding areas, spending thousands of rupees on transportation. Yet many are reportedly forced to return home disappointed without receiving treatment.
The situation has raised serious concerns about the procurement, supply and inventory management of cardiac stents, with alleged shortcomings in planning and negligence further aggravating patients' difficulties. No action against those responsible has so far been reported by the Punjab government or the district administration.
Deputy Commissioner Faisalabad Nauman Siddique said he would review all facts surrounding the issue. Executive Director of FIC Professor Dr Hamid Saeed said stocks had been arranged from cardiology hospitals in Dera Ghazi Khan and Wazirabad to address the shortage, adding that angioplasty procedures were continuing around the clock.
Citizens said they visit FIC in the hope of receiving free treatment in line with the vision of the Punjab chief minister, but complained the hospital was facing a serious shortage of facilities. Amid rising inflation, many patients cannot afford private treatment for heart disease.
They have appealed to CM Maryam Nawaz to take immediate notice, ensure an uninterrupted supply of cardiac stents and initiate action against those responsible for any negligence.
