Pakistan's National Cyber Emergency Response Team, known as National CERT, issued an urgent warning to organizations across the country regarding 10 security vulnerabilities discovered in Node.js, which is one of the most widely used web technologies globally. The advisory, released following updates from the Node.js Project on October 21, 2026, urges government departments, financial institutions, and critical infrastructure operators to update their affected systems immediately to prevent potential cyber attacks.

The newly identified security flaws expose vulnerable systems to severe risks including remote code execution, memory corruption, unauthorized access, and weaknesses in encrypted connections. Officials classified four of these vulnerabilities as high severity, three as medium severity, and three as low severity, putting internet-facing services, backend systems, and cloud-hosted applications at risk if left unpatched.

Understanding the Node.js Security Vulnerabilities

Node.js is an open-source, cross-platform JavaScript runtime environment that executes JavaScript code outside a web browser. Millions of developers and enterprises use it to build scalable network applications, application programming interfaces, and backend services. Because it forms the backbone of many modern web applications, any security flaw in the runtime environment has broad implications for digital security across multiple sectors.

The advisory covers specific Node.js versions, namely 22.x, 24.x, and 26.x. The Node.js Project released security updates on October 21, 2026, to address these weaknesses. National CERT stepped in to warn local entities because unpatched software running these versions can become an entry point for malicious actors seeking to compromise critical networks.

Impact on Government Departments and Financial Institutions

The warning specifically highlights that government departments, financial institutions, and critical information infrastructure are vulnerable. These entities handle sensitive citizen data, financial transactions, and essential public services, making them attractive targets for cyber criminals and state-sponsored threat actors.

An interruption or data breach in these sectors causes widespread disruption to public administration and banking services. Financial institutions rely on secure backend systems to process transactions and protect customer accounts, meaning that vulnerabilities allowing unauthorized access or remote code execution pose a direct threat to economic stability and consumer trust.

Details of the High Severity Flaws

Among the most serious issues identified in the advisory is CVE-2026-111497, which involves an out-of-bounds write in the Brotli decompression component of Node.js. Attackers can exploit this specific flaw by sending specially crafted compressed data to a vulnerable application. This action can potentially execute arbitrary code, crash applications, or grant access to sensitive process memory.

Other vulnerabilities included in the advisory could allow DNS manipulation, improper transport layer security certificate validation, unauthorized hypertext transfer protocol responses, predictable cryptographic identifiers, and access to restricted filesystem locations. Although widespread active exploitation has not been established yet, security researchers have already demonstrated remote code execution against an official Node.js build, and proof-of-concept code for memory corruption has been published online.

Recommended Actions and Immediate Software Updates

National CERT has directed organizations to upgrade affected systems immediately to Node.js versions 22.23.4, 24.22.1, and 26.12.1 or later. Organizations must also identify every Node.js installation across their servers, cloud platforms, development environments, and third-party applications to ensure no legacy or vulnerable instances remain hidden.

Priority should be given to applications that process untrusted Brotli-compressed data. Software updates must be obtained strictly through the official Node.js website or trusted package repositories. The advisory also recommends strict hostname validation, rejecting malformed hostnames and ambiguous internet protocol address representations, and maintaining proper transport layer security certificate verification.

Monitoring and Incident Response Procedures

Cybersecurity teams have been urged to monitor their networks for unexpected application crashes, memory faults, unusual processes launched by Node.js services, suspicious outbound connections, and unauthorized filesystem access. These indicators often point to reconnaissance or attempted exploitation by malicious actors.

Additional defensive measures include container isolation, network segmentation, restricted application privileges, and updated certificate trust stores, including measures addressing the compromised eMudhra intermediate certification authority. Organizations that detect suspicious activity or possible exploitation are instructed to activate incident-response procedures, preserve application and network logs, isolate affected systems where necessary, and install security patches promptly. Incidents can be reported to National CERT through its incident reporting portal, email, or designated contact number, while temporary security measures can reduce exposure but cannot replace installing the fixed software versions.
