Pakistan Social Media Usage Statistics Revealed by PTA

Pakistan ranks first in the world in YouTube video viewing, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeezur Rehman told the National Assembly Standing Committee on IT and Telecom while presenting figures on social media usage in the country.

The latest data highlights a massive digital adoption rate across the nation, driven by affordable mobile data and widespread smartphone penetration. Millions of citizens rely on digital platforms daily for communication, entertainment, and commerce, transforming the local digital economy.

Regulatory bodies monitor these trends closely to ensure infrastructure can support the surging demand. The numbers presented to parliament outline a rapidly expanding digital landscape where video consumption and messaging applications dominate daily internet traffic.

How Many People Use YouTube and TikTok in Pakistan?

The chairman said 96 million Pakistanis currently use YouTube, and 560 million videos are watched on the platform in the country every day. He said TikTok has 100 million users in Pakistan, while 150 million Pakistanis watch and upload videos on the app.

These figures place Pakistan among the most active countries globally for video sharing applications. Content creators, digital marketers, and businesses increasingly target these platforms to reach local audiences who spend hours consuming video material daily.

Short-form video formats on TikTok and long-form content on YouTube capture the attention of diverse demographics. Urban and rural users alike access these services through mobile devices, creating high traffic volumes for telecom operators.

WhatsApp Usage and Daily Communication Volume

Regarding WhatsApp, the PTA chairman said the platform has 100 million users in the country. Pakistanis make one billion calls and send 12 billion messages on the app every day, he added.

This immense volume of daily communication underscores how deeply messaging applications are integrated into personal and professional lives. Businesses rely on WhatsApp for customer service, while families use voice and video calls to stay connected across distances.

The sheer scale of data traffic generated by messaging platforms places heavy demands on underlying network infrastructure. Telecom providers must continuously upgrade their systems to prevent congestion and maintain reliable connectivity for all users.

Data Consumption and Telecom Sector Updates

Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja, who also addressed the meeting, said social media and artificial intelligence have sharply increased data consumption in Pakistan.

The rapid growth in data usage requires continuous investment in network capacity and spectrum management. As citizens stream more high-definition video and use data-heavy applications, telecom operators face the challenge of expanding infrastructure to meet the demand.

Government officials work alongside regulatory agencies to address these challenges and support industry growth. Policies aimed at encouraging infrastructure investment help ensure the digital ecosystem continues to expand sustainably.

5G Spectrum Auction and Network Expansion

She said no spectrum auction had been held since the government led by Nawaz Sharif, leaving the country with 4G services. The present government has since held a 5G spectrum auction, she said. According to the minister, 1.8 million people now use 5G in Pakistan, and the service is being introduced in 24 cities.

Transitioning to newer generation networks allows operators to deliver faster speeds and lower latency for data users. Major urban centers receive priority during the initial rollout phase as telecom companies build out the necessary hardware.

Expanding advanced network coverage supports the broader digital economy, enabling innovations in business, education, and public services. Authorities expect adoption rates to climb as availability extends to additional regions in the future.

Challenges Facing Telecom Infrastructure

The minister said steps were being taken to improve telecom services, noting that service disruptions have several causes. She said theft was one of them, with entire towers, diesel and generators being stolen.

Criminal activity targeting physical infrastructure poses a significant barrier to maintaining consistent network quality. Law enforcement agencies and telecom companies coordinate efforts to secure remote installations and protect vital equipment from theft and vandalism.

Addressing these operational hurdles remains essential for delivering uninterrupted service to millions of subscribers nationwide. Authorities continue to implement security measures to safeguard communication towers and ensure reliable connectivity for the public.
