Carlos Tevez claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson broke a promise to him prior to his departure from Manchester United in 2009. The Argentine star played two seasons at Old Trafford on loan from West Ham spanning 2007 and 2009.
Although the manager allegedly assured him the club would purchase his rights from West Ham, Tevez felt unvalued by the organization and subsequently moved to local rivals Manchester City.
The transfer angered supporters, yet Tevez disclosed on Rio Ferdinand Presents that the exit stemmed largely from a perceived betrayal by his boss. He explained, "They spoke to me (before) the two-year loan. After, if you play well, (we) pay the contract after one year."
He continued, "Fergie told me, 'Carlos, now I'm going to pay out your contract and you're going to stay in Manchester'. The team went to Los Angeles for pre-season. I remember this conversation with Fergie. He said 'I'm going to pay for Berbatov but you, don't worry, I'm going to buy you and we'll do your contract.'"
That agreement failed to materialize, and as time elapsed Tevez grew certain that the club did not genuinely want him. This occurred despite widespread backing from fans who urged Ferguson to sign him permanently.
He stated, "For me, the people, the United fans, understand. They don't understand about Fergie speaking to me, or behind the scenes. What happened between Fergie and me, I think people don't understand that."
He added, "I think that Ferguson had, from the day we talked, up to six months to keep his word. And he didn't. On the contrary, he started leaving me on the bench. In my head, he started pushing me aside so he could bring down what I was worth. And that's what hurt me the most."
Tevez stated, "It was hard Rio, because I felt like I had given my heart to United, and I didn't feel the same in return."
The 42-year-old later triumphed over his former team when City claimed the 2011/12 Premier League title, celebrating by displaying a banner that said RIP Fergie.
Managerial issues were not his only conflicts at the club.
Tevez smiled and concurred after Ferdinand remarked, "When I played against you, you wanted to kill Gary Neville."
Tevez replied, "Gary, he said that I didn't respect Ferguson. He didn't understand me. He didn't understand the situation."
Following a four-year stint with City, Tevez transferred to Italian club Juventus, followed by stints at Shanghai Shenhua and his childhood team Boca Juniors.
