A man was taken into custody by the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency for reportedly cheating a woman out of roughly Rs. 4.45 million by falsely promising marriage via a matrimonial application.
Authorities stated that the individual, operating under the alias "Hassam Uddin," collected the funds via online bank transfers and later demanded more cash by threatening to share edited pictures of the victim online.
Officials registered a case against the detained man under applicable provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act, 2016.
Preliminary findings indicate that the arrested person could have similarly victimized multiple other women.
Agency representatives encouraged additional victims to report their experiences, promising complete privacy for their details.
Citizens were also cautioned by officials to remain careful when interacting on social media networks and matrimonial applications.
