Electricity consumers in Pakistan could face a difficult winter as fuel price adjustments are expected to increase significantly during December, January, and February.
Sources said fuel price adjustments during the three months could rise by two to three times, potentially adding to the financial burden on electricity consumers as power generation costs increase.
Rising Fuel Costs May Push Electricity Bills Higher
Higher prices of liquefied natural gas (LNG), coal, and other fuels are driving up electricity generation costs, while limited domestic gas supplies could create additional challenges for power plants during the winter months.
Domestic gas supplies are also insufficient to meet household demand during winter, leaving power plants with limited access to local gas.
With hydropower generation expected to remain significantly lower during the season, power producers may have to rely on more expensive fuels to meet electricity demand.
Global Fuel Prices Add to Winter Concerns
Sources said elevated fuel prices in international markets could further increase fuel price adjustments. Authorities have made efforts in recent months to limit the fuel cost burden, including implementing load management of up to two hours.
However, international fuel prices, including those of LNG, have now risen substantially. Fears about higher electricity generation costs and increased fuel price adjustments during the coming winter have intensified.
