How Kimi Antonelli Stunned His Father Behind the Wheel at Age Ten
Kimi Antonelli proved his extraordinary racing potential long before reaching the grand stages of Formula 1, shocking his father Marco by controlling a high-powered sports car at speeds reaching 199mph when he was only ten years old. Born into a family immersed in motorsport, the young driver experienced life in the garage from the earliest days of his infancy, developing an instinctive feel for speed and vehicle dynamics that eventually propelled him to the pinnacle of global motorsport.
The remarkable moment took place at the Adria circuit in north-east Italy. While Marco Antonelli was busy racing with his Lamborghini sports car team, his son was competing in a separate karting event at the same venue. Marco recalled that Kimi had been born in a garage, surrounded by the sights and sounds of racing machinery from the very beginning of his life.
The High-Speed Lamborghini Test at Adria Circuit
When the father asked the boy if he wanted to experience the Lamborghini from the passenger seat, the dynamic quickly shifted into something much more extraordinary. Speaking to BBC Sport, Marco explained that he could not see the track properly because Kimi was sitting in front of him wearing a helmet, relying only on the marker panels before each corner, set at 100 metres and 50 metres, to gauge his position.
They started to drive, going step by step, faster and faster, until Marco pushed the machine as hard as he would if he were driving alone. Arriving at the braking point at the end of the straight at 199mph, or 320kmh, Marco braked very hard and right at the absolute limit of the car.
The vehicle experienced significant oversteer during the intense maneuver. Kimi controlled the oversteer perfectly, after which Marco went back on the throttle, while Kimi finished managing the slide, changed gear, and accelerated away.
Marco immediately called an end to the test, saying that it had become dangerous. However, when he reviewed the video later, seeing the ten-year-old child handling the oversteer and managing everything perfectly while sitting on his leg, he realized his son possessed something truly special.
Early Upbringing and Obsession With Motorsport
Motorsport was woven into Kimi Antonelli's daily life from a tiny age. Marco noted that from fifteen days old, Kimi was in the garage, listening to the roar of engines and breathing the smell of exhaust fumes.
When the boy was only three years old, Marco brought a driving simulator into the family home. Each evening, Kimi demanded to drive the simulator for hours on end.
Marco recalled one particular night when he began falling asleep at the simulator because he had started work very early that morning. Without his father paying attention, the virtual car crashed because Marco failed to brake at the end of the straightaway. Young Kimi scolded his father, telling him not to sleep because they still had to drive.
Antonelli first stepped inside an actual karting machine at the age of five. Thanks to his irrepressible talent behind the wheel, he became the major talking point of the paddock throughout motor racing circles by the time he reached eleven years old.
Path to the Mercedes Academy and Formula 1
Marco initially felt reluctant to let Antonelli pursue a full motorsport career, hoping to shield him from the suffering he experienced through his own near misses in DTM touring cars. Despite those parental hesitations, the sheer magnitude of the boy's talent could not be ignored by professional talent scouts.
Mercedes driver academy scout Gwen Lagrue flew directly into Italy to witness the hype firsthand. Following that inspection, the green light was given for the Silver Arrows to recruit the young prodigy and fund his entire developmental path through the junior racing categories.
During his formative karting years, Antonelli shared a coach with fellow F1 rookie Arvid Lindblad. They were trained by Dino Chiesa, the legendary instructor who previously oversaw the junior development of multi-time world champions Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.
When Toto Wolff eventually called Antonelli to inform him that he would be stepping up to replace Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, the teenager had never even driven a full Formula 1 car in an official Grand Prix weekend. That bold gamble paid off spectacularly as Antonelli navigated a steep learning curve during his debut campaign.
Record-Breaking Success and Future Outlook
By his second season in the sport, Antonelli delivered a masterclass across the 2026 calendar. He secured nine race victories, seven pole positions, and sixteen podium finishes on his way to claiming the world championship.
With this triumph, Antonelli rewrote the history books to become the youngest-ever Formula 1 world champion. Sebastian Vettel, who previously held a prominent youth record, was more than three years older when he secured his inaugural drivers title.
The championship victory in Mexico City carried a touch of irony as Antonelli crossed the finish line behind Hamilton, the very driver he had replaced at Mercedes. Following the race, Hamilton and four-time world champion Max Verstappen hoisted the new champion onto their shoulders for a celebratory photograph, echoing the days when a twelve-year-old Antonelli waited in the Mercedes garage simply to collect Hamilton's autograph.
Because of his youth, Antonelli could not even legally drink champagne when he won the United States Grand Prix earlier in his meteoric career. Only one other teenager in the history of the sport shares the distinction of being a Grand Prix race winner, alongside Max Verstappen, cementing Antonelli's place among the elite talents in motorsport history.
