Apple has revealed brand new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro computers featuring OLED screens and touchscreen functionality for the first time.
These fresh laptops will be sold right beside the current MacBook Pro lineup. They also bring Dynamic Island, a lighter build, better speakers, and the comeback of the glowing Apple logo.
Both versions run on Apple's M5 Pro and M5 Max processors, with costs beginning at $2,899.
New OLED Display and Touchscreen
The primary upgrade is Apple's fresh PROLED XDR screen, using Tandem OLED technology previously debuted on the iPad Pro.
This tech merges two OLED layers to enhance brightness and picture quality.
The screens deliver up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness and 1,000 nits of sustained brightness, alongside a variable refresh rate spanning from 10Hz to 120Hz.
They also support P3 and Adobe RGB color spaces, rendering them appropriate for photography, video editing, and design tasks.
For the initial time, MacBook users are able to interact directly with the display via touch.
Users can scroll through pages, zoom into photos, and interact with supported apps without depending entirely on the trackpad or mouse.
Yet, Apple has not entirely redesigned macOS around touch controls. The capability operates alongside the keyboard and trackpad.
Apple has additionally not announced support for the Apple Pencil.
Dynamic Island and New Design
Apple has substituted the traditional display notch with Dynamic Island, akin to the feature seen on iPhones.
It grants access to notifications, ongoing activities, and other details.
However, the fresh MacBook Pro variants still lack Face ID. Users will keep relying on Touch ID for fingerprint authentication.
The laptops are furthermore slightly smaller and lighter than current variants.
Depending on the variant, weight has dropped by roughly 200g to 300g.
Apple has also re-engineered the internal cooling system to channel warm air away from the display.
Another noticeable shift is the return of the illuminated Apple logo on the screen rear, a feature previously present on older MacBooks.
Hardware and Audio
The fresh MacBook Pro models keep the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips featured in the existing lineup.
Memory, storage, connectivity, and battery performance stay largely similar, meaning the biggest differences are the new display and design.
Apple has also upgraded the six-speaker audio setup.
The updated speakers feature redesigned woofers providing 50% deeper bass, alongside new tweeters.
The speaker setup has also been tweaked to preserve sound quality when the laptop lid is shut.
Battery life stays rated at up to 24 hours.
