Spotify officially launched QR code verification for its Family plans, as confirmed by Co-CEO Alex Norström during an earnings call on October 22. Norström described the system as a regular upgrade to verification procedures and noted it lacks an expiration date.

This verification aims at Family plan participants who live apart from the plan manager. Official Spotify rules mandate that all six users share a single home address, though past enforcement depended on easily bypassed address checks.

Scanning a rotating QR code in person drives the new verification. The plan manager accesses their profile picture, selects Your Premium, and opens Manage to display a code that refreshes every few seconds. Family members then scan this code using their phone camera inside the mobile app.

Because both individuals must occupy the same physical location for the scan, screenshots and remote verifications fail. Even so, Reddit users indicated that video calls and multiple devices can bypass the restriction.

Users receive a strict seven-day deadline to finish the scan after receiving a request from Spotify. Missing this period blocks individuals from joining any Family or Duo plan for a full year, though they remain eligible for an Individual plan.

The deployment already covers the United States and Kenya, where Kenyan support pages display the feature. Spotify has not shared a worldwide country list and has not verified when the rollout reaches Pakistan.

Reactions from users remain intensely negative, with Reddit members condemning the household policy as unfair and greedy. Critics pointed out that Apple Family and YouTube Premium do not enforce identical strict address rules.

This verification method presents a major problem for Spotify Premium subscribers in Pakistan, where sharing accounts across different cities, countries, and households is common. Students studying abroad who depend on accounts managed by relatives at home will lose access once the policy applies in Pakistan.

Local subscribers need to plan ahead by moving extended relatives to Individual subscriptions before verification requests arrive, keeping the Family plan exclusively for people living under the same roof.
