Federal Minister for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja announced on Thursday that the government plans to activate the Social Media Regulatory Authority soon. The move aims to strengthen online regulation and address growing cybersecurity threats.

During her speech at the closing ceremony of Cybersecurity Awareness Week, she stated that Pakistan needed to improve its incident reporting mechanisms and cybersecurity awareness as the nation transitions toward greater digitalization.

Cyber threats are becoming more complex due to the expanding use of artificial intelligence, according to the minister. She added that this trend raises the urgency of safeguarding personal information and digital systems.

The minister noted that the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency has already been activated under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act.

Society requires cybersecurity awareness across all sections, the IT minister stressed, especially because younger children are accessing social media and encountering dangers like cyberbullying.

She urged the implementation of stricter digital safety measures. Furthermore, she warned that details published online can leave families and individuals vulnerable to security threats and fraud.
