The University of Karachi issued an order on social media sharing, stopping academic and administrative personnel from posting or sending university details and official papers online without getting consent from the competent authority first.

Registrar Dr Imran Ahmed Siddiqui signed the notification that introduced this prohibition.

Campus leaders discovered that office orders and official letters were appearing in unauthorized social media groups, covering matters such as employee suspensions, postings, transfers, and extra charges.

The directive specifies that workers are prohibited from posting or forwarding any official information or documents on digital networks, or giving them to unauthorized individuals, without prior clearance from the competent authority.

University management cautioned that breaches will face strict handling and could trigger disciplinary measures based on relevant laws, such as Rule 18 of the Government Servants (Conduct) Rules, 1964.

Publicly shared details will go out exclusively through approved channels or official university social media pages.

A few days prior, the Sindh chief secretary led a meeting with vice chancellors from public universities in Sindh, where a university leader suggested reviewing the Right of Access to Information Act, though the chief secretary declined to pursue the suggestion.
